Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. The aunt she had was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay quickly fell in love after showing her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Although DuVernay grew up in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
